2011 Kia Sorento sales revs up in January
Kia Motors America reports January 2010 sales. The 2011 Sorento crossover sales rev up!
Kia Motors America announced its overall sales for the past month totaled 22.123 units. This represents a 0.1 percent increase over January of last year.
Kia’s January sales were lead by new Sorento crossover, which has just recently been put on sale. It hit the Kia dealerships on January 4th and already in its first full sales month achieved its best-ever sales result in the US market. With sales of 7.398 units, the Sorento was also the automaker’s best-selling vehicle in January.
“The all-new Sorento’s tremendous early performance is a clear indication that its combination of modern design, state-of-the-art technology and available resonates with US consumers,” told B.M. Ahn, president and CEO of Kia Motors America and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia.
Forte sedan (together with Forte Koup) also performed pretty good last month. In January, Kia dealers sold 3.732 units, which was enough to take the second spot among the top five best-selling Kia vehicles in the US. The Forte was closely followed by Optima sedan, Rio sub-compact car and Soul crossover with 3.162, 2.398 and 2.145 units sold, respectively.
New Sorento may be blowing up, but Sportage sales went down 81 percent last month. Sportage is an ageing model, still a great value, but it hardly competes with numerous hot-looking crossover vehicles from other automakers. Sales are not expected to improve until the next-generation model hits the dealers later in the year. You can see some new Sportage images at our previous post.
Other models that did even worse were Rondo and Sedona with 356 and 928 units respectively, while sales of discontinued Spectra and Amanti plummeted to zero.
Kia sales – January 2010:
If you measured sales on a day by day basis, like more and more people are starting to do, KIA is up 8% for the month.
–
I hear from experts that measuring saes day by day is the best way to meausre sales.
That goes to show if you equip and price every car like Sorrento it will sell like hotcakes. I think KIA needs to Drop the Price of the base Rio to $9100-$9500. The Soul could be a little cheaer too, like a grand cheaper. Drop Amanti and Sell Cadenza Immediately. Make New Sportage and New Optima Available like 2 days after Chicago.
–
These are temporary solutions.
–
But KIA needs to stick a fork in that Current Gen Optima and Sportage and call it done and quickly. 3162 sales a month for that kind of car in Amerca=Attrocious to the point to where the product needs to be replaced.
I’m sad about the low sales and end of the Rondo. I never saw Kia give a big advertising push or proper marketing behind it. It’s strange because other makers are now pushing similar “crossover” cars like the Rondo. I have a 2008 and absolutely love it! It does everything a big suv does with more interior room than most. It’s one of my best buys ever.
Only 0.1% up?
What is the problem?
What does the Kia Rondo have that the ’11 Kia Sorento doesn’t have, though? A different and quirky look, yes, but not a bad body design by any stretch of Warren Buffett’s imagination, huh?
Bryan, the Sorrento is popular is Female Management types ages 35-45 with young children from what I understand. Incomes about $50-$70K.

Its very good vehicle for that demographic too, its good that they added a few more upmarket features to it.
Sorry, off topic. HyundaiSmoke, I assume you are the same person that posts on CarAdvice.com.au?
Optima and Sportage won’t be out until New York. There were many dealers that sold almost a Sorento a day.
I agree with TL. Rondo is Kia’s best kept secret. I’ve had one since Oct 07 and found it to be the best designed vehicle in its class. The Kia marketing team should give their collective heads a shake! Many of my friends are impressed with it but they’ve never heard of it. I went to the Edmonton Moter Show last week and Kia wasn’t even represented – what gives??
The Sorento was the 3 best cuv in sales in USA in Jan.
Anyone know what Kia’s announcement will be during the Super Bowl? I just went to KMA’s site and the Sorento shows up with the sock monkey, teddy bear, robot and alien(?) creature sitting in it… Possibly they will advertise the UVO coming out this summer?
Well, no UVO ad. Just an ad for the 2011 Sorento. I was a bit let down. Though it was an entertaining advert.

😀
I own a 2009 Kia Rondo and I absolutely love it. It has room for our family of 5 . I love the Kia company this is my fifth Kia I go on owning starting back in 1996 I have owned the 96 Sportage, 97 Sephia, 01 Spectra, 04 Sorento, and now my 09 Rondo. I have never had any problems with Kia and hope to continue purchasing Kia’s for a long time to come, I have owned other name brand cars also but I always come back to Kia due to the many problems I have had with the other name brands to me Kia is number one in my mind.
I just heard that Kia plans to add on an LX V6 Sorento model to the USA market – to promote even greater growth. Kia is targeting 370,000 sales in 2010 and 3% market share.
Would make sense to add LX V6 for the USA market, since they make one for Canada already.
I like in Colombia and just bought a Sorento 2010. V6 277Hp engine ex trim. Superó chicle. Cheap on gas, very quick, excellent on badura roads. An absolute winner. Could nothing be better.
I have 600 miles on a FWD LX automatic. Twice I have had the transmission appear to lock up while going down the road, once at 45 and once at 60 MPH. It gives the feeling of hitting a tree stump in the middle of the road. The event is accompanied by a loud bang inside the vehicle. The trans then goes into 4th gear by itself and will not shift higher until you stop the vehicle, remove the key and restart the motor.
The dealer said they never heard of this kind of problem and it has not thrown any codes yet.
Any ideas???????
Call Kia corporate, let them know about the problem. In the mean time, your warranty should cover your transmission issue.
