Kia reports best-ever December sales
Kia Motors America today released its sales numbers for the month of December 2010.
During the last month of 2010, Kia managed to sell 30.444 new cars and SUVs across the USA (best-ever December sales!), while year-to-date sales have eclipsed the 350.000 units for the first time in the automaker’s history.
Kia sales last month were led by Sorento crossover, the automaker’s best-selling vehicle in the States in 2010.
The all-new Sorento has been Kia’s best selling vehicle ever since its introduction and its first-year sales have already surpassed the 100.000 sales mark, which is an incredible result for a new vehicle.
In December Kia sold 9.801 Sorento crossovers in the States.
Kia Forte and Soul have been both selling very well throughout the year.
With 6.367 and 5.694 units sold, respectively, the Soul and Forte took the second and third spot last month.
The 2011 Kia Sportage followed both Kia compact cars in fourth with 2.525 units sold, while Kia’s newcomer, the 2011 Optima sedan took fifth place (1880 units sold). Kia also sold 1.226 units of previous generation Optima.
Sales of the afore-mentioned models accounted for 86.3 percent of the December 2010 sales volume revealed Kia Motors America.
How about other models? The Sedona MPV was Kia’s sixth best selling vehicle last month with 1.672 units sold. The Sedona is rumored to be replaced with the all-new model late this year or early next year.
You will be able to see the first glimpse of the next generation Sedona MPV at Detroit Motor Show next week, where Kia will put on display its latest concept car called KV7. Many believe that Kia KV7 previews the replacement model for the ageing Sedona MPV…
Rio sales fell to only 900+ units from nearly 4.000 units sold a year earlier, while Borrego SUV sales tumbled to less than 300 units.
Kia sales by model – December 2010
Stay tuned for more Kia sales figure statistcis!
Borrego sales “tumbling” isn’t a surprise since all the units are 2+ years old (build dates I’ve seen are in 2008) and availability is limited. I’d say the Rondo’s sales “tumbled” even more than the Borrego.

I’m hoping to make it to NAIAS to see the Kia (and Hyundai’s) display this year.

Congrats to Kia on a great December! Honorable mentions to that single Spectra and Amanti sale.

😉
Even though it is somewhat hideous, the Amanti is actually a really great, world-class vehicle. I hope the Cadenza can fill its shoes (other than in the styling department). My (other) aunt purchased a Borrego in December. Somehow, I think the Soul had something to do with Rondo sales, because they haven’t hit 1,000 units per month since the Soul was released. Really eerie how Rondo sales suddenly died. I can’t wait to get to NAIAS, it will be great this year.
Rondo suppose to be discontinued for 2011 in USA
The Rondo officially had a 2010 model year, but in terms of product 2009 was the last model year for the Rondo. I don’t think ANY dealers saw an EX 2010 Rondo, or a 2010 LX Rondo with the Plus package. The 2010 Rondo never even made it to Kia.com
Sales will pick up when Kia makes the prices more like Kia prices.
The Rondo was the 5th best selling vehicle for Kia Canada in 2010. Kia Canada had a record year with sales up 16.8% over 2009, they have also had 24 consecutive months of sales growth. The Soul was the 3rd best seller so it proves the Rondo and Soul can compete together.
The Rondo will continue into the 2011 model year in Canada, along with some minor styling updates, such as a new grille.
For those who’ve been watching these contests, Nissan managed to pull out a win over Hyundai-Kia as a group in the US, selling about 14K more units in 2010 than H-K did. However, that’s a decrease of over 21K units vs. the margin in 2009, so 2011 will be interesting.
In Canada, the race with Toyota ended up being in H-K’s favor, as they sold 357 more cars than Toyota to eke out the win.
The 2010 Rondo was not sold on dealer lots in the U.S. But we have acquired some used 2010’s. That is the reason for the low sales. I believe they were only offered as a fleet vehicle.
@ Jeremiah. The 2010 Rondo was absolutely sold on dealer lots…including mine. We sold a few. They were originally only built for the fleet market but Kia ended up releasing them to dealers after the fleet market declined them.
Yes, I remember seeing a couple of Rondos on our lot. I know it was 2010 because there was an “A” in the VIN sequence. We have had 2 customers custom order the 2011 grille for the Rondo – from Canada.
we sold many rondos here at our dealer, we coudlnt get enought…… i think the rondo is a great car.
with 2.4gdi/6-speed auto powertrain(31mpg est.(my personal est.)) and a “new kia image” makeover it would be a huge seller.
a seven passanger, 30+mpg, great looking car, for about 20K….. who could resist?
In it’s 4-year run, our dealer alone moved over 1,200 Rondos. They were our best-seller in 2008. They are terrible in the snow, unfortunately.
