Kia Announces April 2015 Car Sales Figures

Kia Motors have announced their monthly sales for April, and have seen a slight decline over the numbers posted at the same time last year.

Kia sold a total of 53,282 vehicles in the US in April 2015, which was down ever so slightly from the 53,676 units sold in April 2014.

Leading the way for the Koreans was the Kia Optima and the fully redesigned 2016 Sorento CUV, selling 13,666 and 9,808 units, respectively.

The Kia Soul was also a slid performer, but it’s fair to say that the company has to be a little disappointed with the drop in sales the the funky little unit experienced over last year, goinf from 14,000 units in 2014 to 11,408 this year.

2016 Kia Sorento SXLIt wasn’t all bad news for the Soul, though, as the electric version sold 73 units to deliver it best month this year.

Total year-to-date Soul EV sales in the US are now at 253, which is actually impressive when you consider that it is only available in limited quantities.

Five more U.S states will start selling the Soul EV this year, so watch for a bigger second half.

The Sportage crossover was another solid performer for Kia, selling 4,273 units, while the Kia Forte compact kicked in another 7,000+ units.

The star of the month in regards to sales growth was the new Kia Sedona minivan.

People must have noticed that the Sedona won Motor Trend’s minivan comparison test, as well as the 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA, because sales of the new minivan have jumped an astonishing 400% year to date.

The Sedona managed 3,394 units sold in April compared to 625 units in 2014.

The vehicles that did not perform as well were the Rio subcompact with 2,802 units compared to 3,214 last year, and also the luxury models, the Cadenza and K900, which managed only 598 and 140 units, respectively.

Kia Sales Highlights – April 2015

  • combined sales of the Sportage and Sorento crossover vehicles are up nearly 20% year-to-date
  • year-to-date Kia sales have reached 194,382 units (compared to 186,682 units in 2014)
  • Sedona sales have taken off and are up more than 400 percent year-to-date

  1. KIA Canada was down 3.3%, but up 0.8% YTD, top seller was the Sorento up 61.6% and up 50.3% YTD Soul was up 9.8% and up 26.3% YTD

  2. When Kia brings out the Kia GT, it’s not enough demand for two RWD Kias in the same line up. A RWD sedan must go and it won’t be the GT. No one even asked for a luxury sports sedan to be priced at 65K to begin with. If I remember correctly people asked for RWD sports sedan. It’s hardly enough demand for the Cadenza as well. Maybe the 2017 Cadenza on spy shots can bring in more demand.

  3. Here are the top 20 best selling CUVs sold in America.
    1. Honda CR-V
    2. Chevy Equinox (selling so well because GM won’t let the public know it’s a Daewoo)
    3. Ford Escape
    4. Toyota Rav-4
    5. Nissan Rouge
    6. Jeep Cherokee (what’s so special about this CUV? I think it’s over rated).
    7. Jeep Wrangler
    8. Ford Explorer
    9. Jeep Grand Cherokee (one of my favoirte SUVs)
    10. Suburu Forester
    11. Toyota Highlander
    12. Ford Edge (Outsold by the Highlander? Who would have guessed?)
    13. Chevy Traverse (the design the next Honda Pilot will take after)
    14. Honda Pilot (when the next Pilot takes after the Traverse’s design I know sells will be top 10 again)
    15. Hyundai Sante Fe
    16. Kia Sorento
    17. Jeep Patriot
    18. Mazda CX-5
    19. GMC Terrain (How ironic is that 2nd from last while the Daewoo is 2nd from 1st.)
    20. GMC Accadia

Neither the Sorento or Sante FE are where I wanted them to be but it’s better than not being in top 20 at all.

    6. Nissan Altima(what both the Nissan and Ford outsold by the bore Accord?)
    7. Hyundai Elantra (Hyundai outselling the Focus and the Daewoo Cruze)
    8. Chevy Cruze (AKA Daewoo Cruze)
    9. Chrysler 200 (Nice looking car)
    10. Ford Focus (I rented this, it’s a nice car though the cabin and steering feel on this 2014 Focus wasn’t no better than my 2010 Forte)
    11. Hyundai Sonata (It outsold the Malibu….again)
    12. Chevy Malibu
    13. Nissan Sentra
    14. Kia Optima (next generation better outsell the Chrsyler 200)

    16. Suburu Outback
    17. VW Jetta
    18. Kia Soul (waiting for AWD next generation so it can be recognized as a CUV)

  5. jtz – the Equinox and Terrain are not Daewoo, where did that come from? They are built in Ontario, Canada and Tennessee, US.

  6. @ Ahmad Picanto isn’t sold here in the USA.
@conwelpic, I didn’t know that the Cruze or Equionox weren’t Daewoo. I thought they were because of GM Daewoo. My bad.

    Below are best selling Minivans
    1. Toyota Sienna 11,353
    2. Honda Odyessy 11,092
    3. Dodge Caravan 6,126
    4. Town N’ Coun. 5,053
    5. Kia Sedona 3,394
    6. Nissan Quest 864
    7. Mazda 5 436
    8. VW Routan 0

The Sedona is hanging in there fairly. Though impresive the Toyota & Honda are over 10K outselling many crossovers.

  7. the Chev Trax and the Buick Encore are built at the former GM Daewoo plant. The Chev Cruze is built in Lordstown, Ohio

  8. Kia Soul (waiting for AWD next generation so it can be recognized as a CUV) – See more at: http://www.kia-world.net/kia-sales-april-2015/#sthash.hka0swb4.dpuf

jtz – the AWD Soul is a Soul I’ll probably want a part of. I bought and drive a 2011 Kia Soul with the 5-speed stick. Great, great small, boxy rig. This is my 3rd Kia and every one I get tops the last Kia I had. But an AWD Kia Soul with that mustard-y yellow color and 6-speed stick (they’ve added a manual gear starting in model year 2014 I believe – with the new Soul bodystyle) would certainly keep my boat afloat.

  9. Did anyone notice we haven’t seen spy shots in months now? Kia’s up to something. They know we on to them. That’s why they hiding the GT. But where is it being tested. That’s the million dollar question. What country is it being tested. I know it’s been out. It probably gets tested like 2am when majority of people or asleep. I know it’s been out. Trust me or my name ain’t jtz.

Also, I know the Cadenza has been out more than once. It just hasn’t been caught in a while. The Cadenza and GT could be tested together. I think Kia is using the facelifted cee’d or Sportage to go out first to distract people. I’m keeping my eye sharp I don’t won’t to miss any chance of not seeing the Kia GT wearing black.

  10. I’m going to see if I can find more rumours about future Kias. Like I haven’t gotten info in a while if Hyundai or Kia bought some BMWs or Lexus models to take back to their R&D.

However, I hear that GM has the new Sedona in their R&D though. I also hear that a number of manufacturers bought the Sorento back their R&D such as Ford and Toyota and I think Honda. Not sure about Mazda though.

I also hear that Ford has the new Highlander in their R&D and GM have the Fusion in theirs. Kia is tight lipped on many things so I don’t know what outside car could be in their R&D? It could be an Audi or a BMW. I don’t know though. I also hear Mercedes stripped apart the 2015 3 series in their R&D. Oh and Acura bought a Lexus NX probably to take it apart for the next RDX.

  11. I just know that the build quality on my 2011 Kia Soul white 5-speed is just stellar, strong and endearing to me. What a carmaker! My brief foray to Mitsubishi was not so endearing. Our ’08 Lancer GTS’ engine blew up on Hiway 54 heading south to El Paso. Humm. Turns out Mitsubishi knew about a bad serpentine belt they put on new world order Lancer’s. We didn’t know that, yet, because Mitsubishi didn’t tell us. So we traded in our shell of a Lancer without an engine to Viva Mitsubishi/Kia in El Paso, TX. Got our cool ’11 Kia Soul outta the deal.

Later, a recall notice comes to our New Mexico rental home. Fancy that – it’s for our model Lancer and it’s for a faulty serpentine belt that might prematurely break. Wow! So we call Mitsubishi consumer affairs and ask if they can throw us a bone maybe.

You guessed it. Not a chance! No compensation for you. No soup for you. I’ll stay with Kia Motors for now on. A Kia Soul, possibly one with AWD, would fit the bill nicely.
