Kia Sportage electric vehicle set for the 2011 unveiling?
Kia reveals plans about the all-new CUV-based electric vehicle.
During the official unveiling of the all-new Hyundai BlueOn electric car last week, Kia revealed it plans to jump into the EV fight by unveiling its very-first full-time electric car.
Not many details about the vehicle have been released to the press so far, however, it was revealed by John-hee, director of Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicle development program, that Kia’s up-coming electrified vehicle is going to be based on a compact crossover vehicle. It was also revealed that Kia plans to produce a few hundreeds of units of the CUV-based electric vehicle.
The early fleet of Hyundai-Kia electric cars will include around 2.000 units of Kia’s CUV and 500 units of Hyundai BlueOn electric car. Each of the produced all-electric vehicles will be supplied to Korean government agencies for a trial run. Commercial sales of both cars are expected to commence in the South Korean market in the first half of 2013.
What we also know about the up-coming electric Kia crossover vehicle is that the model will feature a lithium-ion battery pack, supplied by SK Corporation. It will be capable of driving around 80 miles on a single charge.
The Sportage will look really good as an EV! I really hope HKAG builds another 1-2 plants in the US. Kia needs to build the Optima hybrid and the Sportage EV (and the originals) here in the states.
I very highly doubt it. In fact, I doubt it so much that if there is a new design, I will cut my arm off. Kia actually makes smart financial decisions.
Hi,
The Sportage seems to be slightly too heavy to be an electric car, don’t you think so ?
Ever considered the Venga as a compact crossover vehicle (same family than the Soul) ?
This product line seems more suitable !
Very True, I would bet that it will be in the Venga or the Sportage.
this is an old news from 2009 .the i10 electric was in development back then and the first supposed to have theses was Korean gov! so if Kia is going to electric with the Hyundai electric kit, why not ! Put all this stuff in the new 2011 Sportage and adjust the power and range for this bigger then i10 vehicle!
And please HKA HURRY to bring in north america your new technology,
Sonata Hybrid is due to arrive in january 2011 in NorthAm, a little late in my opinion!

remove the engine and tranny, exhaust system,radiator,4 wheels drive system, lead battery and fuel tank.
How much weight you removed? a lot!
the electric engine and cvt tranny almost = the weight of the 6 speeds tranny itself!
And it will handle better because the weights will be more equalized.
I read the article. Boxy vehicle = Soul, Soul has 102.3 cu. ft. of interior volume. By government definition, that is a midsize car. The TF Optima’s interior volume is 102.2 cu. ft. Kia is NOT going to develop a whole new vehicle and PAY for a new design (all of those designs cost a LOT of money) The Soul has more interior volume than the Sportage, too.
No Elantra at Kia plant, that’s at the Hyundai plant in Alabama. I can’t remember if the Tucson and Sportage are built at a Hyundai plant or at a Kia plant in Europe.
The ix35 and the Sportage are made alongside the cee’d in Slovakia. The Venga is made at Hyundai’s Czech plant.
